Welcome all new Digital Leaders!

I will try to post on here most weeks so you can share our sessions with your families and friends.

This week we looked at some thought provoking images and discussed how not all images on the internet are real or as they seem. We talked about internet safety and searching using good keywords and phrases. We also discussed people's interpretations of an image and how this can differ due to our age or background etc.

We ended our session with a quick go on Puppet Pals using the iPads.

Trip to Makers Guild Portsmouth

The lovely Digital Leaders on their way to Makers Guild, Portsmouth!

We ate lunch in the park before our short walk to The Guild Hall.

When we arrived we started by taking photo’s using ‘proper’ equipment and thought about the frame set up.

We discussed the importance of light when taking photographs and compared this to a pinhole camera and our camera obscurer.

Next we had a look around the workshop:

We looked at 3D printers and what they can produce.

This is a soup bar dispenser which shaves off a slither of soap in order to avoid soup scum and ensure the antibacterial agents in the soap are used effectively.

We met one of the craftsmen who makes things from leather. He showed us a hide and explained how technology can be used alongside natural craftsmanship.

We met a lady who showed us how she makes things from glass.
She uses the kiln to heat up the glass and showed us some of the products that went wrong.

This sun catcher has the ashes from a customers dog set inside the glass!

Some projects combined techniques. For example, a 3D printer was used to create a mould, then this was filled with plaster and set to make a ceramic cup and saucer.

After our tour we edited some of our photographs we took earlier on the computer using Photoshop. We decapitated Hagrid and gave the cactus a Peppa Pig t-shirt. What else would we do?!?!

We have some ideas for sculptures we could create in our school grounds.
Before we knew it, it was time to head home.

Here is a QR code to the Makers Guild website if you want to learn more about what they do:

Wicographer Competition 2019!

The Digital Leaders had the responsibility of judging our annual photo competition last week and today they presented the winner and runners up with their prize, kindly donated by Pete Richards, our school governor! Well done all that entered. The photos were very impressive- every single one told a story!

PowerPoint

Tech Talk:

Why do software companies produce different versions?

  • To make money
  • To keep it up-to-date
  • To work on different operating systems

What's an Operating System (OS)?
Different operating systems can be used for different reasons. Some are used for every day things like on a personal computer. Others are used for specialised work.

It can be small (like MenuetOS), or big (like Microsoft Windows).

An operating system has many jobs. It is responsible for making sure that all the programs can use the Central Processing Unit (CPU), system memorydisplaysinput devices like printers, and other hardware. It also lets the user have a fast, clean, and safe interface so they can do work on the computer. It also talks to other computers or devices on a network.

Because PowerPoint is part of the Microsoft Office suite, its version is the same as that of the Office suite that comes with the computer you are using. Which, in turn, means that if, for example, you have Microsoft Office 2019, you also have PowerPoint 2019. If you have Microsoft Office 2003, you also have PowerPoint 2003 and so on. As a consequence, to know what version of PowerPoint you use, you need to know what version of Office you own.

Play: Open Power Point.
What version do we use at school? Is it the same as mine?
Make a PP of the new ducklings.
Let me show you how to:

  • insert information on the ducklings from Student Resources.
  • design your slides.
  • tradition your slides.
  • add slides.
  • add animations.

AR

AR
Playing with the children in my garden yesterday afternoon. Look what happened:

We watched this TED video about Augmented Reality (AR) and what it can do and where it may go in the future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDvBowq3ed8

we then visited:

http://www.quivervision.com

where we printed some colouring sheets, coloured them and then used Apple technology to bring these images to life using AR and QR codes.

I also showed the children the Wazzy App where we made a dinosaur visit the Readers Lounge!
